Feminine Steams

Feminine Steams

Yoni steaming, also called vaginal steaming, is a traditional herbal practice used by women across many cultures for generations. Warm herbal steam is allowed to gently rise beneath the body while resting over a bowl of hot water infused with medicinal plants. Traditionally, yoni steaming has been used as a ritual for rest, reconnection, womb care, and feminine wellness.

Many women turn to yoni steaming as a way to slow down, reconnect with their bodies, and support their menstrual and reproductive health naturally.

Different herbs are chosen depending on the intention of the steam. Some herbs are grounding and warming, while others are cooling, soothing, cleansing, or calming.

Traditionally, yoni steaming has been used to support:

  • Menstrual discomfort and cramping
  • Feelings of stagnation or heaviness
  • Postpartum recovery
  • Relaxation and nervous system support
  • Vaginal dryness or irritation
  • Emotional release and self-care rituals
  • Connection to the womb and feminine body

Many women also simply enjoy yoni steaming as a quiet ritual of rest and care.

The Power of Steaming

As the warm steam rises, the aromatic compounds and volatile oils from the herbs are released into the water and surrounding air. The warmth encourages relaxation and increased circulation while the herbs provide their own unique traditional properties.

Common herbs used in yoni steaming include:

  • Rose for softness, emotional support, and gentle cooling
  • Calendula for soothing and skin support
  • Mugwort for traditional womb support
  • Lavender or marshmallow for cooling, relaxation and calming
  • Chamomile for irritation and sensitivity
  • Yarrow for toning and traditional feminine care

A Ritual of Slowing Down

In many ways, yoni steaming is less about “fixing” the body and more about creating intentional space for rest, warmth, and connection. It invites softness into a world that often asks women to move too quickly and ignore their bodies.

Whether used monthly, seasonally, or simply whenever you feel called to slow down, yoni steaming can become a beautiful ritual of feminine care and herbal support.

How To

There are steaming seats made specifically for yoni steaming, but they are not necessary. I recommend finding a bowl that fits securely into your toilet bowl and rests flat and sturdy across the seat. Finding the right bowl is usually the trickiest part. The lip of the bowl should be flat so you can sit comfortably, wide enough that it won’t slip into the toilet, and deep enough to hold plenty of water without being so full that your body touches the hot water.

Place your herbal blend into the bowl and cover with boiling water. Allow it to cool for 5–10 minutes, or until the steam feels comfortably warm rather than too hot. This is important, as overly hot steam can be irritating to sensitive tissues.

While the herbs steep, take time to create a comfortable and intentional space. Light candles, play calming music, bring crystals, journal, or prepare a cup of tea. Yoni steaming can become a beautiful ritual when you allow yourself to fully settle into the experience.

Sit over the steam for 15–40 minutes with a towel or sheet wrapped around your waist and legs to keep the warmth contained. During this time, you may choose to meditate, practice breathwork, journal, pray, or simply rest quietly. This is an opportunity to slow down, reconnect with your body, and honor your womb space with care and intention.

Afterward, I suggest lying down and spending a few moments gently massaging the pelvic area, hips, lower back, or abdomen. The warmth of the steam can encourage relaxation and help you tune into areas of tension or holding within the body. A great opportunity to release.

Enjoy your ritual.
